History Background Of Kartarpur
The Kartarpur Corridor is a boundary corridor between Pakistan
and
India, connecting the Sikh shrines of Baba Nanak Sahib (located in Punjab,
India) and Gurdwara Darbar (in Pakistan, Punjab). The corridor is planned to
allow spiritual devotees from India to visit the Gurdwara situated in Kartapur
Village, 4.7 K.M (2.9 M) from the India-Pakistan boundary, without a visa.
on
28 November 2018, the foundation stone on the Pakistani side was laid down by
Chief Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan Nyazee. The corridor was completed for
the 550th birth anniversary of Grou Nanak Sahib on 12 November 2019.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, said
"Pakistan believes that the road to the prosperity of the region and
bright future of our coming generation lies in peace", adding that
"Pakistan is not only opening the border but also their hearts for the
Sikh community”.
Previously, Sikh pilgrims from India had to
take a bus to Lahore to get to Kartarpur, which is 125 km journey although
people on the Indian side of the border could physically see Gurdwara Sahib
Kartarpur on the Pakistani side. An elevated observation platform had also been
constructed on the Indian side, where people use binoculars to get good.
Significance of Kartarpur Corridor
The Gurdwara was built to commemorate the
site where Guru Sahib, the founder of Sikh Religious, settled after his
missionary work and did farming. Guru Nanak founded the Kartarpur town by
Situated Ravi River in 1515, plowing the fields and setting up a community
kitchen, or Langer. He assembled a Sikh commune there and lived for 18 years
until his death on 22 September 1539. The Gurdwara is assembled where Guru
Nanak is said to have died. It is, therefore, the second blessed place of the
Sikh religion after Janam Asthan – the birthplace of Guru Nanak located in Guru
Sahib, Pakistan.
Guru Nanak Three Principles
Here, Guru Nanak gave three principles Kirat
Karo, Naam Japo, Wand Chako, which means work hard for a livelihood, keep
remembering God and share your bounties with the world. Guru's teachings have
been peace, harmony and universal brotherhood. Guru Nanak believed in equality
between castes, religions, and genders and gave the word Ik poker meaning there
is only one God.
According to Lahore-based art historian Fakr
Syed Aijazuddin, the tomb houses the last copies of the original Guru Granth
Sahib. A Sikh hajj remarked, "Every step here prompts us of the Guru's
life". Indian Sikhs meet in huge numbers on heights on the Indian side of
the boundary to attain darshan, or sacred viewing, of the site.
As per popular
legend, after Guru Nanak died, there was a dispute between the local Shikhs and
Muslims. Muslims, who saw him as there, wanted to bury him while Shikhs, who
claimed Nanak as their Guru, wanted to cremate his body. But the fable follows
that Guru Nanak's body was twisted into flowers, which were then separated
between the two communities.
